To
maintain reliable electric service, Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC)
has begun an extensive program to trim or even remove trees that interfere with
overhead power lines. Tree trimming will occur along all power lines in Kimball,
over the next few months, approximately following its city limits. An SVEC
representative will leave a "door hanger" card a few days prior to
tree work as additional notification.
There
are a few things our Co-op members can do to help reduce the frequency of
outages and still have beautiful trees:
Understand
that SVEC trims trees as a service to you. It is a vital part of our goal to
provide you with reliable electric service.
Help
us help you. Keep an open mind when an SVEC representative explains why
trimming activities are occurring.
Please be patient. We realize that proper line clearing work initially affects the way your tree's canopy looks. However, after some time the regrowth from the tree tends to soften the effect of the trimming.
By
allowing our contractor to use proper trimming techniques, your trees remain
healthy, and the regrowth on the tree tends to be less conflicting with the
power lines. Over time the pruning techniques being used will train tree
growth away from the power lines further reducing the amount of trimming
that will have to be done.
It
comes as no surprise that our customers love their trees. We are fortunate to be
blessed with a beautiful canopy of trees throughout our community. However,
trees are one of the major causes of power outages. When a tree or its limbs
come into contact with energized power lines a "short circuit" or
damage to the wires could occur. When this happens it could be instantaneous,
where the lights blink for just a moment and you have to reset all your digital
clocks, or it can result in an outage where several customers or even several
streets are without power.
