In cooperation with the Tennessee Environmental Council (TEC) and its State Agency partners, Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative will serve as a distribution center for the 2018 “250K Tree Day” on Friday, February 23, at each of our four main offices. The goal of the event is to plant 250,000 native seedlings on February 24, 2018 across all 95 counties of Tennessee. To achieve this goal the group will provide free seedlings, while supplies last, to any Tennessee resident who registers between now and February 1st. All interested Tennesseans are invited to register for the free seedlings at: www.tectn.org/250KTreeDay. Joining TEC in conducting the event are the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). According to TDEC this is the largest community tree-planting event in the United States, and the largest in the history of Tennessee. In order for this project to succeed, event organizers need to recruit upwards of 40,000 volunteers to plant the seedlings on February 24. Seedlings may be reserved in bundles of 5 at the website www.tectn.org/250KTreeDay. Each bundle of 5 seedlings includes one each of Northern Red Oak, Tulip Poplar, Red Bud, Pine and a fifth hardwood specie that varies depending upon where the participant lives and chooses to pick up seedlings. “Trees help protect our state’s most important natural resources,” said TDEC commissioner Bob Martineau. “They are vital for maintaining water quality, healthy air, flood prevention, wildlife habitat and healthy communities.” Those who register for trees in our service area may choose to pick up trees at the SVEC office in Dunlap, Pikeville, South Pittsburg or Tracy City on Friday February 23. The address for each office is listed on the Your SVEC Offices page. For more information contact Roy Harver at 423-837-5060.
