We are serving all of the SVEC service area in Marion County with the exception on the Monteagle area, due to the Tennessee Broadband Accessibility Act stipulating electric cooperative cannot compete with telephone cooperatives. We will build-out the fiber network in phases, so not all residences/businesses will be eligible for service at the same time.
We will be updating members as we begin building through neighborhoods in Marion County. Watch for announcements on our website, social media sites, and local news outlets. Let us know you’re interested and how to get in touch with you and we will let you know when we’re in your neck of the woods!
Your local electric cooperative, Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC), opened SVEConnect for business this year. SVEC has been delivering safe, reliable and affordable power to the region since 1939. SVEConnect will provide advanced communication solutions like high-speed internet, telephone and television programming through a broadband fiber network to members in Marion County, not including the Monteagle area.
We will offer two high-speed internet packages for residences and businesses:
200 Mbps download/upload
1 Gbps (1 Gig) download/upload
Fiber optics is the latest technology in providing broadband services. Fiber is known for being future-proof, meaning that the fiber we install today will be able to handle increased data loads as the need for more and more speed grows. Fiber technology makes it possible to deliver speeds up to 1 Gig (1,000 megabits per second or 1,000 mbps). This is 100x faster than what the average home or business can get currently. Fiber is more reliable than other types of networks such as DSL and satellite, by being less prone to interference and complications from lightning and other natural elements.
When the Tennessee Broadband Accessibility Act was passed by the Tennessee Legislature in 2017, it made it legal for electric cooperatives in the state to offer telecommunications services. However, one stipulation of the Act is that electric cooperatives cannot compete with telephone cooperatives. The only area in the Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative service area that is not served by a telephone cooperative is Marion County, excluding Monteagle.
No. SVEConnect will be a self-sustaining business. Funds from SVEC cannot be used to subsidize broadband services and SVEC is regulated by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
SVEC has built a fiber network – a “back-bone” to connect our offices and substations and to support technology to make the delivery of electricity more efficient, affordable and reliable. This fiber has the capacity to carry much more information than is used by SVEC. SVEConnect will lease space on this fiber and sell this space to the SVEC members who choose SVEConnect as their internet/telephone/television programing provider. This partnership makes better use of SVEC’s investment in our fiber network.
No. Because of legal and regulatory restrictions, funds from electric rate payers cannot be used to subsidize broadband services, so this service will not affect electric rates.
Speeds of 200 Mbps and 1 Gbps (Gig) will be available for high internet use. The FCC recommends more than 25 Mbps for high-use. For more information on what speed you should have, go to: www.fcc.gov/research-reports/guides/household-broadband-guide
